Banditry Attacks: Katsina Deploys Dogs To Secure Boarding Schools

Banditry Attacks: Katsina Deploys Dogs To Secure Boarding Schools

Katsina has approved the deployment of dogs to complement security arrangements to secure boarding schools in the State.

Commissioner for Education, Dr Badamasi Charanchi, told The Nation the decision was to complement efforts of security personnel attached to each boarding school.

He said: “We were advised to deploy these dogs at each school because they have special abilities to detect any intruder faster than human beings in many instances.

“These dogs, when deployed will alert the students and other security agents in case of any intruder or bandits whenever they are coming.

”It was advice from the security agencies and we find it expedient because of the current security situation. Even most of the police stations and rich men have dogs to facilitate and assist security and the vigilante groups.”

Governor Bello Masari said his administration has re-enforced the security architecture of the boarding schools before reopening them.

According to him, apart from deploying five security guards, a perimeter fence was erected with a security watchtower in the boarding schools.

Bandits invaded Government Secondary School, Kankara last year and took away 342 students later rescued by security agencies.

Oyo Gov, Makinde, Orders LAUTECH VC To Step Aside Till Further Notice

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has ordered the Vice Chancellor, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, Professor Michael Ologunde, to step aside till further notice..

In a letter dated April 16, 2021, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, Oyo commissioner for education, science and technology, said Makinde also asked the vice-chancellor to hand over to the next principal officer.

Olaleye, however, did not give a reason for the governor’s decision.

“His Excellency, Engineer Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, Governor of Oyo State and Visitor to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has directed that the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Professor M.O. Ologunde, should step aside until further notice,” the letter reads.

“Consequently, the Vice Chancellor has been directed to hand over forthwith to the next Principal Officer in rank in order to ensure uninterrupted flow of normal activities in the university.”

Ologunde, a professor of food science and engineering, was appointed in December 2018.

The development comes months after LAUTECH was officially ceded to Oyo, following an agreement reached between Oyo and Osun states.

Abubakar Rasheed, executive secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), had announced the dissolution of the joint ownership of the institution in November 2020.

“The mutually agreed dissolution was formalised through the signing of a memorandum of agreement by the executive governors of Oyo and Osun states, witnessed by the attorneys-general of both states, giving legal effect to the transfer of ownership of LAUTECH to Oyo state and the College of Health Sciences to the government of Osun state,” Rasheed had said.
